EAT LOCAL AND LEARN
With a series of three “Eat Local” food shows, residents had their pallets allured with the flavors of farm fresh food. Kevin and this team from the market created dishes that were 100% from items that were currently available at the Coit Road Farmers Market. That means picked hours ago and a few miles away. The events had the same intimate feeling as when you shop at the market with local musicians playing in the background. There were food art activities, quick pickling demos, knife sharpening and knife skill workshops.
Project Topic: Healthy Eating
Project Description: Produce three local food shows with free admission and food to eat for area residents during the growing season. At least four free cooking classes will be held in the weeks following each food show. The food shows will include cooking demonstrations, hands on cooking skills sessions, food related art sessions for children and teens, presentations on gardening techniques from urban farmers and gardeners. The shows will include music and games. The hands-on cooking skill sessions will cover produce selection/preparation, knife techniques, healthy seasoning, cooking techniques and food preservation.
Community Engagement Strategy: We plan to engage area chefs, food pantries, church groups, health care providers and community gardeners. Residents will be able to taste the food and learn from the chefs by hands on practice at the events.
